As the recipient of a fellowship from Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Associate Professor Valerie Soe will be doing field research next summer in Taiwan for a documentary titled Love Boat: Taiwan. This featured film examines a Taiwanese government initiative known as the Expatriate Youth Taiwan Tour from the perspectives of the participants, their parents and the organizers. An annual trip for up to 1500 Taiwanese Americans since the late 1960s, the six week program immerse students in Taiwanese language classes, arts and cultures. Overtime the study tour became known as a setting for participants to find new friendships and develop romance that transcended national borders. These initimate connections became known as The Taiwan Love Boat.
