AAS Students and Faculty at Nikkei Angel Island Pilgrimage

By David Ka Wai Pan

Students from Asian American Studies participated and volunteered in the 2nd annual Nikkei Angel Island Pilgrimage that was sponsored by the Nichi Bei Foundation, the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation and the National Japanese American Historical Society. On the ferry ride to Angel Island, Professor Ueunten gave a cultural performance to the crowd. Shortly after the arrival, Professor Kobashigawa presented on the history of Japanese Americans who were detained at the immigration station. Attendees later participated in genealogy research to learn more about their families. Roughly fifty students were present at the event, with twenty five of them serving as volunteers.
